Milly James back again with another DJ Raw Sugar-produced top shelf backroom affair on Love Sexy Records, this time featuring the mellifluous stylings of James Michél on bass. Compared with Milly’s previous EP on LSR, Brown Skin Boys adopts a more immediate, more open and more luminous feel without losing any of the knowing, near-tangible soul she seems to just exude.
The EP kicks off with title track “Brown Skin Boys”, an off-kilter honey drip punctuated by syncopated percussion and a clockwork organ. With a breath-like quality to its relentless pushing and pulling rhythm, this one has plenty of room to move. From there, the blinds open a bit more to let in an extra kiss of sunlight in the form of “Oh Woman”; an airy and carefree cut underpinned by a, somehow, delicate yet substantial bassline stepping on throughout. The breeziness continues with “I Feel Your Melody” but the carefreeness is gone, replaced by an express ticket to your favoured corner of the dancefloor. An overflowing, low-slung groover splashed with boogie inflections, it pairs as well with kicking off your night as it does with melting at the afterparty. “Not Who We Used 2 B” rounds things out with a shimmering Rhodes cascading around Milly’s contemplative, reflective vocal. Although it’s a track largely concerned with past tense, you can’t ignore the optimism Milly brings to the track.
Backing up the EP’s four original cuts are two fantastic remixes calibrating things for a different tip. KOLA zooms in and readjusts the lens on “Oh Woman” for a driven, even more sun-kissed up-tempo take on it, while Science Girl shifts “I Feel Your Melody” into a slinky, proto-post-2-step number.
